Montana Balloon flightsHot air balloon trips are the thing in Montana, and busy people can delight in this spectacular way to fly any time the weather conditions are favorable. While many outdoor enthusiasts have never gotten near a lighter than air craft, those who have flown aboard in one remember this great experience for years to come!Once airborne, balloons just float with the wind. It is true that the pilot doesn't know where the balloon will land ahead of time, but that doesn't mean he can't control the flight. Before the balloon is launched, the pilot knows which way the wind is blowing so he knows which way the balloon will go. The air is in layers, and the different layers may be moving in different directions. So even though the pilot can't steer the balloon, he can move up and down to find a layer of air that will allow the balloon to change direction. Some days the amount of change is very small; other days the balloon may be able to actually turn around and fly in the opposite direction.
How long do balloon rides last? Most balloon flights are in the air for 30 minutes to one hour, but you should plan on being out with the balloon team for three hours or more. First, the pilot must determine the launch site based on current wind direction. The chase crew will follow the balloon during the flight and will be there when the balloon lands. the balloon is packed up and passengers and crew are returned to the original meeting place. Be sure to check with the company you are flying with to see how long your flight is expected to last.
