Balloons usually fly within two or three hours of sunrise and sunset, when the winds are calmest and conditions most stable. During the middle of the day, upper level pressure gradient winds mix down to the surface. In addition, the development of thermals which the glider pilots love can be highly dangerous for the balloonist. Balloonists try to be on the ground no later than three hours after sunrise, and not launch more than that amount of time before sunset. Time of year makes much less difference than time of day.

Balloon rides can be experienced by anyone. Most flights last as much as an hour, notwithstanding check with your pilot to find out what they offer. Occasionally they have several offerings to choose from.

Can we fly at a balloon festival?

Check with your local balloon company to see if you can get your balloon ride during a nearby festival. Flying at a festival is a unique experience, and is one that you don't want to miss if possible.

Each festival has their own rules, and many do not allow paid passenger rides for several reasons, including FAA restrictions or insurance concerns. Some festivals, however, not only allow passenger flights but encourage spectators to fly by selling balloon rides at the festival.

Preplanning is the key - you'll want to know well in advance if you can fly at the balloon festival you plan to attend.
